Netanyahu Calls Stabbed Indian Pilot a Hero; Flydubai Halts Israel Flights
TEL AVIV / DUBAI — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly commended Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar as a "true hero" after he fought off a knife-wielding co-pilot who reportedly attempted to crash a passenger jet carrying 174 people.
The harrowing mid-air confrontation broke out as the Boeing 737 MAX 8 was cruising and approaching its descent towards Israel.
Seconds From Disaster
Flight-tracking telemetry confirmed that the aircraft experienced an abrupt loss of altitude during the cockpit struggle, plunging approximately 14,000 feet in under a minute while transmitting transponder distress signals indicating unlawful interference.
Despite sustaining deep stab wounds and heavy bleeding, Captain Machchhar fought back against his assailant and managed to unlock the fortified cockpit door.
Another qualified crew member stepped into the flight deck to stabilize the controls, pull the aircraft out of its dive, and divert it to Tabuk Regional Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia, where it landed safely.

Netanyahu Salutes Captain Machchhar
In a video statement and subsequent post on social media, Prime Minister Netanyahu expressed gratitude to Captain Machchhar for preventing a catastrophe.
"My salute to the Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his extraordinary bravery," Netanyahu said.
"Despite being stabbed and seriously injured, he fought back, resisted, opened the cockpit door, and enabled passengers and crew to overpower the attacker—preventing a catastrophic mid-air disaster. He saved the lives of 174 people, including Israeli citizens and other nationals. I wish Captain Machchhar a speedy and full recovery. He is a true hero."
Israeli authorities, including Defense Minister Israel Katz, pointed to the incident as an attempted hostile attack, ordering security reviews across both domestic and foreign commercial carriers serving Ben Gurion Airport.
An Experienced Aviator
Captain Smit Machchhar, a resident of Dubai, is a veteran pilot with over 13 years of commercial experience on the Boeing 737 family.
Both pilots were hospitalized in Saudi Arabia following the landing, while passengers were flown to Tel Aviv on a relief flight later that evening.
Flydubai Suspends Israel Flights
In the aftermath of the event, Flydubai confirmed that an altercation had occurred on the flight deck and announced a suspension of its scheduled operations to Israel pending a joint multi-agency probe. The incident has raised critical questions regarding airline crew vetting, mental health monitoring, and flight deck access protocols during commercial operations across the region.
