Public sector bank operations across India will face major disruptions as UFBU calls a 3-day nationwide strike. Check reasons, affected services, and ATM availability.
Operations to Grind to a Halt: 3-Day Nationwide Bank Strike Begins — Here’s Why
NEW DELHI — Banking services across India, particularly at public sector banks (PSBs) and regional rural banks (RRBs), are poised for significant disruption as bank unions embark on a three-day nationwide strike.
The mass demonstration, spearheaded by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU)—an umbrella body representing major bank employee and officer unions—comes after rounds of conciliation meetings with the government and bank managements ended in a deadlock.
With the three-day shutdown taking effect, branch-dependent operations such as cash deposits, withdrawals, paper instrument clearing, loan processing, and physical account services are expected to slow down or come to a standstill across thousands of branches nationwide.
Why Are Bank Employees on Strike?
The current agitation stems from long-pending structural and welfare demands that unions claim have remained unresolved despite prior assurances:
-
Implementation of a 5-Day Banking Week:
The primary catalyst remains the demand for all Saturdays to be declared official bank holidays.
Under the existing system agreed upon in 2015, banks remain closed on the second and fourth Saturdays while operating on the remaining Saturdays. Unions argue that other major financial institutions—including the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), the Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), central government offices, and foreign exchange markets—already observe a 5-day week. To offset the loss of working hours, unions proposed extending working hours on weekdays. -
Pension Updation & Parity:
Unions are seeking an updation of pensions for past retirees to account for rising costs of living.
Under the current framework, retirees who exited services decades ago continue to draw basic pensions pegged to wage scales active at their retirement date, leading to stark disparities. Additional demands include a uniform Dearness Allowance (DA) formula and an option for employees enrolled in the National Pension System (NPS) to return to the Old Pension Scheme (OPS). -
Performance-Linked Incentive (PLI) Discontent:
Revisions to incentive policies triggered pushback from officer associations, who labeled the criteria exclusionary toward lower-cadre employees and junior scales. While authorities kept the revised PLI framework in abeyance during talks, union leaders stated that core commitments on working hours remained unaddressed.
Critical Timing: Half-Yearly Closing Strains
The timing of the strike carries added weight as it coincides with half-yearly closing operations—a crucial window when financial institutions conduct quarterly provisioning, ledger reconciliation, and treasury balancing.

What Customers Can Do
-
Rely on Digital Channels:
UPI, IMPS, NEFT, and RTGS platforms, along with official mobile banking applications, are expected to function normally. -
ATM Withdrawals:
Most standalone and offsite ATMs will remain operational, though customers are advised to plan withdrawals in advance as machine refill cycles could experience localized stress if branch supply teams are absent. -
Private Sector Branches: While major private lenders are not primary signatories to the strike notice, services dependent on interbank settlement, currency chests, or public-sector clearing houses may still experience transit delays.
With UFBU cautioning that unresolved grievances could lead to escalating protest actions in the coming month, customers are strongly urged to complete urgent, in-person paperwork via digital alternatives wherever possible.
