TUMAKURU, KARNATAKA – In a harrowing incident that has sparked statewide outrage, a six-year-old girl lost two of her fingers due to alleged gross negligence at a government primary school in Guluru, located on the outskirts of Tumakuru.

The tragedy, which occurred on February 11 but gained national attention this weekend, has raised serious questions regarding student safety and the basic humanity of school administrations.

The Incident: A "Freak Accident" Turned Nightmare

The victim, a Class 1 student, was reportedly waiting in a queue for her midday meal on the school premises. According to witness accounts and the police complaint, a heavy iron classroom door was slammed shut—either by the wind or a person—crushing the young girl’s hand. The impact was so severe that two of her fingers were instantly severed.

While the physical injury was devastating, the response from the school authorities has been described as "inhumane" by the victim's family.

Allegations of Gross Negligence

Despite the child bleeding profusely and in extreme pain, teachers at the school allegedly failed to provide immediate medical attention. The most shocking claim made by the parents—who are daily-wage construction workers—is that the severed portions of the fingers were not preserved for medical reattachment.

Instead, it is alleged that the school staff swept up the severed parts and dumped them into a waste bin. When the frantic parents later arrived and searched for the fingers, they were reportedly told that the parts were disposed of because the "sight of blood" was frightening other students.

Medical experts at the Tumakuru District Hospital stated that had the severed fingers been preserved in ice and brought to the hospital immediately, a reattachment surgery might have been successful.

Police Action and FIR Filed

Following a formal complaint by the child’s parents, the Tumakuru Rural Police have registered an FIR. The officials named in the complaint include:

  • Nagesh: School Headmaster

  • Renukamma & Venkatesh: Teachers

  • Hanumanthappa: Block Education Officer (BEO)

The charges include negligence and insensitive handling of an emergency. Furthermore, the family alleged that the school tried to "hush up" the matter by transferring a meagre sum of ₹2,000 into the father's bank account shortly after the incident.

Outcry for Student Safety

The incident has triggered a massive backlash against the Karnataka Education Department. Social media users and child rights activists are demanding stricter safety protocols in government schools and a complete overhaul of emergency response training for teaching staff.

"A school is supposed to be the safest place for a child," said a local activist. "To treat a six-year-old's injury with such callousness is not just negligence; it is a crime against humanity."

As the investigation continues, the young girl remains under medical observation, facing a life-changing disability that experts say could have been avoided with a simple timely intervention.
