In a heart-wrenching incident that has shaken the Bindki area of Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, a young couple was found dead in their rented home just five months after they eloped to start a life together. The tragedy, which unfolded on February 19, 2026, highlights the devastating impact of societal pressure and familial rejection on young love.

The Final Moments

The victims, identified as Amarjeet Kushwaha (30) and Rekha Sonkar (25), were residents of Jafrabad village. According to police reports, the sequence of events began early Thursday morning.

Amarjeet was reportedly found hanging in the bathroom of their rented accommodation on Lalauli Road. In a chilling turn of events, it was Rekha who first discovered his body and alerted the local police. However, before the police team could arrive at the scene, Rekha, overcome by grief and despair, allegedly took her own life in another room of the house.

A Love Story Against the Odds

The couple’s journey was marred by struggle from the very beginning. Belonging to different castes, their relationship faced stiff opposition from both families.

  • The Elopement: About five months ago, the duo decided to elope and solemnize their marriage against their families' wishes.

  • Family Severance: Following their marriage, both families reportedly severed all ties with them, leaving the couple to navigate the world entirely on their own.

  • The Return to Fatehpur: After spending a few months in Kanpur, the couple moved back to Bindki in January 2026, hoping to build a stable life in a rented home.

The Police Investigation

Station House Officer (SHO) Hemant Kumar Mishra confirmed that a forensics team has inspected the site and collected vital evidence. Initial investigations suggest that the couple died by suicide within hours of each other.

The police also revealed a history of tension; back in September 2024, when Amarjeet’s family attempted to arrange his marriage elsewhere, Rekha had sought police intervention to protect their relationship. Despite legal maturity and police mediation at the time, societal and familial acceptance remained out of reach.

A Community in Mourning

This incident has sparked intense conversation in the region about the mental health of young couples who marry against traditional norms. The isolation caused by "social boycotting" by families often leaves such couples with no support system during times of domestic or financial stress.

The bodies have been sent for post-mortem, and police are currently recording statements from neighbors and relatives to determine if there were any immediate triggers for this extreme step.
