High Tension at Mumbai’s Shivaji Park as CJP Stages Defiant Protest Demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation
MUMBAI — High political drama gripped central Mumbai on Friday afternoon as hundreds of civil rights activists, students, and citizens assembled at the historic Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Park in Dadar, demanding the immediate resignation and criminal prosecution of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.
Organised by the pressure group Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), the demonstration went ahead despite the Mumbai Police formally rejecting permission for a gathering at Shivaji Park, citing standard protocol that designates south Mumbai's Azad Maidan as the city's sole authorized protest venue.
Defying the curbs on Gandhi Jayanti, demonstrators converged around Gate Number 6 of the ground by 4:00 PM, holding up tricolours and placards with sharp satirical messages such as "Gyanu, Tujha Democracy Var Bharosa Nay Kay?"
The agitation drew notable public figures, including music composer Vishal Dadlani and actor Naseeruddin Shah, while actor Prakash Raj extended solidarity through an online video address.
The Spark: Allegations Over Electoral Roll Revisions
The confrontation stems from heated disputes surrounding the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke and co-convenor Saurav Das have alleged sweeping discrepancies and arbitrary deletions of registered voters from the electoral rolls following the 2024 general elections.
Addressing the crowd in Dadar, Dipke accused the poll body's leadership of undermining democratic integrity.
"This is about the fundamental right of every Indian to vote without administrative manipulation," Dipke stated. "We chose to launch this nationwide civil resistance from Mumbai because the mandate of the voter cannot be compromised behind closed doors. If political leaders can hold massive election rallies here at Shivaji Park, citizens defending the Constitution have every right to gather here peacefully."
CJP convenor Saurav Das reiterated that the group's agitation is strictly independent of mainstream political alliances and will expand into nationwide district-level marches throughout October.
Three Core Demands
The demonstrators presented a formal charter addressed to the Union government and the President of India:
-
Immediate Resignation & Probe: The stepping down of CEC Gyanesh Kumar, accompanied by an independent judicial inquiry into the chain of command behind recent voter deletions.
-
Rollback of SIR:
An immediate freeze on the ongoing Special Intensive Revision and the reinstatement of the validated January 2025 electoral list as the baseline for upcoming polls. -
Institutional Reform: The repeal of the 2023 Chief Election Commissioner Appointment Act in favor of a collegium mechanism featuring non-partisan oversight and civil society inputs.
Heavy Security and Political Pushback
Anticipating large crowds, the Mumbai Police turned Dadar and the arterial roads leading up to Shivaji Park into a fortress.
The demonstration triggered immediate political counter-reactions. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis dismissed the agitation, maintaining that recent detailed press clarifications by the Election Commission had already dismantled the allegations.
"The Election Commission's technical briefings have thoroughly exposed the hollowness of this narrative," CM Fadnavis said in a statement. "This is an orchestrated attempt to manufacture distrust in premier constitutional bodies, and the public will not buy into such coordinated misinformation."
Simultaneously, a counter-demonstration emerged near the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar statue by an outfit calling itself 'Gen Next Mumbai', which accused the CJP leadership of orchestrating public disruption and sensationalizing administrative processes.
Parallel agitations also unfolded in the national capital, where scores of Youth Congress and Aam Aadmi Party demonstrators were detained outside Nirvachan Sadan and Jantar Mantar while attempting to march toward the ECI headquarters.
With the CJP leadership warning of an indefinite sit-in at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar later this month if their demands remain unaddressed, the standoff over the poll panel's transparency shows no signs of waning.
